Harrisville, W.Va. – The Town of Harrisville continues to work with the Hughes River Water Board on the tank project.
Mayor Alan Haught briefed Council on the status of the project at the Tuesday, Sept. 13, meeting.
Ryan Holcomb, who oversees the project for Thrasher Engineering, was unable to attend, so Haught conveyed the information.
In order to install a new water tank, the HRWB needs access to the future site. A new access road is planned, but will cross several adjacent properties. The owners have been contacted and agreed to sell the needed parts of their land to the Hughes River Water Board.
The Town of Harrisville is one of those landowners. Haught asked Council to approve the land conveyance needed for the project, which approved unanimously.
Town Attorney Rodney Windom was hired to handle the legal work. According to the mayor, Windom Law Office is currently finalizing the conveyances between the other landowners and the water board.
Sidewalk Project
According to Mayor Haught, the sidewalk project is coming along nicely and he asked to extend the project.
Residents on the north side of Stout Street and the south end of South Street have issues with water getting into their basements because the sidewalks are eroded.
Replacing those two sections will cost $19,400 and Council was in favor.
Park Projects
Electric system upgrades at the municipal park are complete and the town’s Christmas light display will return this holiday season.
The tennis courts still need upgraded. Quotes for new surfaces and fence are expected before next month’s meeting.
Councilmember Scott Wolfe reported the restrooms at the park had been painted, and said, “They look like they are brand new.”
The playground area has been filled with new rubber mulch, and the playground equipment was power washed.
The Ritchie County Board of Education is conveying land between the volleyball field and the BOE parking lot to the Town of Harrisville.
Wolfe met with a surveyor to discuss the matter, and received the plat and real estate description.
Mayor Haught confirmed consulting with Attorney Windom and dropped off the paperwork.
Wolfe suggested putting steps from the Board of Education parking lot down to the park. He said during last year’s t-ball season that parents needed to park there for practice, but had trouble getting down the hill when it was muddy.
In other matters, Council did the following:
•Approved minutes and paid bills as presented.
•Jody Murphy, District 3 State Senate candidate, attended the Council meeting. A Democrat, he will host a meet and greet in Ritchie County soon. The St. Marys resident said, “Our little towns are drying up and I am here to help.” He also claimed that he is running for state senate to improve the economic situation of the state for future generations and a chance to stay in the Mountain State.
•Building permits were approved for Lisa Howell, 565 Washburn Street, deck; and Frank Hall, 408 Classic Lane, addition to existing building.
