ELLENBORO, W.Va. — Another new coach has been added to the staff at Ritchie County High School.
Michelle Jones has been hired to guide the Lady Rebel volleyball program, beginning with the 2023 season.
Her appointment comes after the resignation of longtime coach Matt Carpenter, who was recently employed by Salem University to serve has head volleyball coach at that school.
Jones is currently in her first year as assistant coach of the Lady Rebel basketball team, and prior to that she coached four seasons as head coach of the Ritchie County Middle School girls’ basketball team.
She was also the Lady Trailblazer head coach for two seasons, and RCHS girls’ track assistant coach for one year.
“Coaching is something that I’m passionate about and I enjoy teaching athletes not only about game strategies, but also give them tools and confidence in themselves that they can take into the next chapters of their lives,” said Jones.
She commented that Coach Carpenter did a great job of building a winning program and she hopes to not only maintain that foundation, but also continue to grow it.
“I am looking into a couple clinics this summer to gain the knowledge I will need to hopefully lead the team to success. I will also be looking to other coaches and individuals who have experience in the sport for help and ideas along the way,” the new coach commented.
Jones reported the Lady Rebels have several returnees to lead the team next year, and she will look for them to be leaders on the court.
Jayci Gray will run the back row and help as an added hitter on the front row, while Sydney Kopshina will be on the outside and a presence at the net.
Other girls moving up who should provide good minutes are Baylee Butta, Kila Frymier and Laci Hilkey. Also, the incoming freshman class has lots of potential.
Kim DeLancey is the current assistant coach and Jones is looking forward to working with and learning from her. “She has years of experience in the program and is a great asset to the team.”
Jones can’t wait to get started and having a successful season that puts Ritchie County back in Charleston come November.
